Frequently asked questions
Do I need a Hacker News account?
No. Reading, searching, the hiring board and the replies inbox all work without logging in. For the inbox, enter your Hacker News username in Settings; the app reads replies from Hacker News's public data, so no password is needed.
How does the Inbox find replies to me?
At each refresh the app looks at your newest comments and stories from the last three weeks and lists any new replies under them, newest first. Turn on Notify me about replies in Settings to be told when one arrives. Your phone decides how often background refresh runs, so a notification can take a while; opening the app checks straight away.
How do I fold a long thread?
Tap any comment to fold it and its replies into one line; tap again to unfold. Collapse all above the comments folds every top-level comment into an outline. The ↑ and ↓ buttons jump between top-level comments, and Fold replies from depth in Settings opens long threads already folded.
What do the numbers and “new” marks mean?
Stories are numbered in Hacker News's own order. The box on the right of a story shows its comment count, with +N when comments have arrived since you last opened it. Inside a thread, those comments are marked new.
How does the hiring board work?
The Hiring tab shows the monthly “Who is hiring?”, “Who wants to be hired?” and freelancer threads as cards. Search with several words (all must match), exclude a word with a minus sign, and use the tags to filter, for example Remote or Visa. Star posts to keep them and hide the ones you've ruled out. Alert me saves the current search and notifies you about new matching posts. The company, location and salary are picked out of each post automatically, so check the full post before applying.
Does it work offline?
Yes. At each refresh the top stories of the lists you choose in Settings are downloaded with all their comments and, on Wi-Fi by default, their articles. Stories you open and stories you save are kept too. Download now in Settings does it straight away.
How do I report a comment or block someone?
Long-press a comment or story (or use More on a story's page) and choose Report… to flag it on Hacker News, email Hacker News's moderators, or report it to us, or Block to hide that user's stories and comments everywhere in the app. Blocked users are listed in Settings, where you can unblock them.
Can I post, vote or edit comments?
Not in this version. Logging in to reply, vote and edit your comments is planned for a later version.
Where is my data stored?
Everything stays on your phone: saved stories and threads, your username, starred and hidden posts, blocked users and settings. Nothing is stored on our side. Deleting the app removes it all; Delete offline copies in Settings frees space without losing saved stories.
Is this the official Hacker News app?
No. Hafnium HN is an independent app by Hafnium Research, not affiliated with Y Combinator or Hacker News. It uses Hacker News's public API and Algolia's Hacker News search.
